Summary

At the FJ Dynamics booth at INTERGEO 2025 in Frankfurt, Dennis from FJD shows Michal Gula the new Trion P2 handheld SLAM scanner: lighter than the P1, with an internal camera for real-time colorization, a denser point cloud, 3D Gaussian splatting in FJD Trion Model, an extension pole for high and low spots, continuous scanning and control points captured with a survey pole.

Key ideas

  1. 1According to Dennis from FJD, the Trion P2 integrates an internal camera for real-time colorization and an upgraded algorithm, Hyper Dense Plus, for a much denser point cloud – and it is lighter than the P1.
  2. 23D Gaussian splatting is processed in FJD’s Trion Model software and, according to Dennis, is included in its basic version; scanning from different angles and adding the external camera improves the result.
  3. 3The extension pole reaches up to three meters or down into a manhole; Dennis gives pile measurement as an example, where the pole captures the top for a volume calculation in Trion Model.
  4. 4Continuous scanning lets you stop at a locked door and resume at the same place later, and control points can be captured with a survey pole instead of putting the scanner on the ground, according to Dennis.
  5. 5A GNSS receiver is optional and comes with the package for outdoor work, and a phone mount shows the real-time data in 3D, 2D or sections while keeping the hands free.

Questions answered

What is new in the FJD Trion P2 compared with the P1?
According to Dennis from FJD, the Trion P2 is lighter, has an internal camera for real-time colorization and uses the upgraded Hyper Dense Plus algorithm for a denser point cloud.
Can the FJD Trion P2 make 3D Gaussian splats?
Yes – Dennis from FJD says Gaussian splatting is processed in the FJD Trion Model software and is included in its basic version; scanning from different angles and with the external camera gives a better result.
Can you pause a scan with the FJD Trion P2 and continue later?
According to Dennis from FJD, the continuous scanning feature lets you stop the scan, for example at a locked door, and restart it at the same place to continue.
How do you capture control points with the FJD Trion P2?
Dennis from FJD says the P2 works with a survey pole: you capture the ground point with the pole, set its height, and press capture in the FJD Trion Scan app.

Michal Gula: Hey, Dennis

Dennis (FJD): Hi, Michael

Michal Gula: What you're holding there?

Dennis (FJD): Oh, this one is ac- actually our latest product, FJD Trion P2. So while two years ago you have tried the P1 running with it-... and right now we, it comes with P2, with an upgrade all integrated inside. So if we have internal camera, so we can get real time colorization. And also we got a upgrade for the algorithm. We got the Hyper Dense Plus, so we can get much more denser point cloud out of the P2.

Michal Gula: Okay. So it's not just the re- redesign, but y- it's actually you improved the whole technology around it, yeah?

Dennis (FJD): Exactly. It's much more lighter than P1, and then easier to plug in like this.

Michal Gula: Should, it should be easier to run with this one than it was the one two years ago, yeah?

Dennis (FJD): Exactly. Exactly. So also it comes with extension pole. You can in- install it on the extension pole.

Michal Gula: Okay

Dennis (FJD): So if you want to get a better, for example, a 3DGS result, you can also add a extension camera on it, and then you can go higher up.

Michal Gula: Tell me, tell me, be- before we go to the extension pole, tell me more about the 3D Gaussian splatting integration.

Dennis (FJD): Oh, yeah. So right now we got the 3D Gaussian splatting inside our software, FJD Trion Model. Inside the basic version you can get it for free. So basically if you purchase our scanner, you get it inside our home, you do a scan with, different angles, and also with the exte- external camera, then you can get 3D Gaussian result.

Michal Gula: perfect. is the processing of 3D Gaussian splatting like fully inter- integrated into your pipeline or how does it work?

Dennis (FJD): So basically it's actually integrated in our basic model. So in FJD Trion Model, our software, after you scan it, you can download the data, put it inside our FJD Trion Model, and you'll be able to process the 3DGS result.

Michal Gula: Okay, perfect. so tell me about, about the pole, because I, I really like the...

Dennis (FJD): Yeah. So with this extension pole, it can go high up to three meters or, well, not just go up, you can also go down. So doing like this, you can scan the manhole. So, for example, if you have a manhole to scan, you can just put this down and then scan it-

Michal Gula: Okay

Dennis (FJD): and then get it back up and it's all stored inside the scanner.

Michal Gula: Okay. So, so what I, what I noticed when I'm scanning for the 3D Gaussian splatting, it usually happens that if you do it only in, in one altitude, you usually get these different floaters and, not, covered data, right? So I just guess that, this, pole could be good, to get like, like the different angles and different, altitudes of the scanning.

Dennis (FJD): Yeah. For example, if you have a pile, measurement, sometimes if you are scanning on the ground, maybe it's taller than you, then you cannot cover that top part. So with the extension pole, you can actually go much higher up. So you can basically scan the whole profile of it and inside FJD Trion Model, you can actually get the volume calculation of the pile. So-

Michal Gula: Okay. So w- when I'm trying to, like, at the first moment, I want to capture something that very high and then I want to turn it around and put it in a manhole. Do I need to somehow like, stop the scanning or is it going to work me dancing with, with it around?

Dennis (FJD): It's going to work dancing around. So, well, what, but we know that in some certain cases, maybe the door is locked in or there's some places you cannot go, then you have to stop the scan. Actually, we have a feature that can help you in this kind of scenario. We have continuous scanning. So even though you stop the scan, you can also restart the scan again at the same place and continue the scan to somewhere where you wasn't be able to get in. So you open the door and then you can press continuous scan and do this job.

Michal Gula: So if, if I want to do, bigger scans with this small device, I just assume I would need to use the control. So how do I use the control with this?

Dennis (FJD): Yeah. So the best part about this is usually you have to take that off and then put it on the ground, right? But for this one, you can also work with survey pole. So you can basically just capture the, the ground point with the survey pole, just press capture inside FJD Trion Scan app. That will do the job.

Michal Gula: So I, I guess I would need to set the height of the pole, right?

Dennis (FJD): Exactly.

Michal Gula: Okay.

Dennis (FJD): Exactly.

Michal Gula: Perfect. And, what about the GNSS receiver? Is it inbuilt or do I need to add it? Can I add the small one or big one? What can I add to this?

Dennis (FJD): So it's a optional items for you to put it on or without it. Well, it also comes with the package itself. So in indoor area you might not need it, but if you're outdoor area, you can add on top of it.

Michal Gula: Perfect. And, I mean, while I'm scanning and I want to know what I ha- I have already scanned, I usually use the app, right?

Dennis (FJD): Yes.

Michal Gula: So, can I attach it to, to the scanner or how does it work?

Dennis (FJD): Ah, yes. We also have a phone, case mounting. So if you want to mount your phone onto the scanner so you can free your hands, for doing other job, you can also attach it on, on the scanner itself. So you can view it on, on the scanner, and you can see real time data in 3D, 2D, or different sections based on what you want to see.

Michal Gula: Is there anything else you would like to add to this beauty?

Dennis (FJD): Well, I think this one is actually a very compact device and it's also very light right now. if you guys would like to order it or let- know more about our device, you can contact us below and we'll find you the support you need.

Michal Gula: Perfect. Thank you.

Dennis (FJD): Thank you.
